Things to do in the Twin Cities week of 10/20

Top things to do for Families

Top pick: The Big Carve in Stillwater!

This is my top pick because it's fun, family-friendly and involves teaching your children how to handle weapons! The Big Carve pumpkin carving party in Stillwater is being held on Wednesday, October 24th at Lift Bridge Brewery. Leave your favorite knives, machetes, axes, etc. at home for safety reasons, which apparently is important with kiddos. The brewery is providing the carving kits with a ticket fee of $5 which you can preorder here. The event runs from 5pm to 8pm and includes live music, food, treats and of course, beer for the adults and root beer for the kids.

Runner-Up: Science Museum Boo-ology!

Pack up the rug rats under 12 and cart them down to the Science Museum on Saturday, October 26th from noon until four. Why? FREE ADMISSION! (If they show up in costume). Also there will be a variety of spooky science-related activities including Liz, the Kitchen Pantry Scientist. They have a Halloween costume, might as well get some mileage out of it. Besides they get a whole night off from homework on the 31st, here's a chance to make them earn it with a little bit of learning.

Other notable events for families:

Twin Cities Harvest Festival and Maze is open one last weekend! Located in Brooklyn Park this event will cost you $10 a ticket, kids under 3 feet are free. The maze is about as close to driving your kids out into the middle of nowhere and leaving them as you'll get. In the "about me" the owner is listed as an experienced "corn maze developer", no idea how you go about getting that certification but this guy clearly doesn't mess around. They also have a ton of attractions besides said maze like a petting zoo, climbing wall, and a pumpkin' slinger. Plus a portion of each ticket goes to charity... probably to benefit the families of the children lost in his maze.

Top things to do for Adults

Top pick: Spooky Speak-easy at the Soap Factory!

It wouldn't be Halloween in Minnesota without mentioning The Soap Factory. You must be over 18 and passably sober for entrance into this famous Twin Cities Haunted House. However once you're done peeing your pants you'll need to replenish some liquids and the pop-up Spooky speak-easy on site will be there for you when you're finished. Although not sure what state you'll be in at the end of the tour being that the website indeed does state, "You will get messy, dress accordingly." Ectoplasm apparently won't be remedied with a tide pen. Tickets are range from $25 - $27 bucks and you can buy them ahead of time here. For those too cowardly to attempt the haunted house forget it and just head straight to the bar where cocktails from Bittercube’s Nick Kosevich and La Belle Vie’s Johnny Michaels every Friday and Saturday evening will be featured. Oh and the cherry on top? Food trucks lined up outside. Boom!

Other notable events for adults:

Goosebumps Unscripted is being held this Friday, October 25th and also Halloween night at 10:30pm at the Improv Comedy Club, Comedy Sportz in Minneapolis. This 18+ event invites the audience to give the title clues for the cast to act out for the perfect nostalgic trip. The price is $14 and yes, they serve beer and wine ya lush!

American Sky Brewing Brew-Hallow is going on this Saturday, October 26th in Hudson, Wisconsin. Yes, I know this technically isn't Minnesota, get over it, it's free! Free admission for 8 breweries each bringing a special beer on tap. There is a costume contest, live music, apple bobbin', hammerschlagen and some food. Hudson isn't that far of a drive, really.

   Top activities for Foodies

It's RESTAURANT WEEK!

A lot of great deals to be had during the week for those of us who love to stuff our face! $10- $20 lunches and $15- $30 dinners at some of the bigger names in the 'biz. Not too shabby! To put this in perspective for those who might not be as well versed on the restaurants of the cities that's roughly the value equivalance of 2 to 4 McDonald's Quarter Pounder meals for a lunch and 3 to 6 for a dinner; What a deal! Here's a fantastic grid of the deals, now go TREAT YO SELF!

Other notable events for foodies:

Fulton Brewery- Pittsburgh Blue Dinner is tomorrow night, 10/22 in Maple Grove. Got $60 burning a hole in your pocket? No plans or friends on a Tuesday night? Go make some, or just stuff your lonely face. Last I heard it still had openings so get on that!

Summit Brewing- Eden Valley Grille is Thursday, 10/24 in Edina. Like what I said above only you're ten bucks short? Lucky you, this one is $50! Again same story; beer, good food, also Oktoberfest themed. Also I should mention this poster specifically calls out "Entertainment" as included yet doesn't specify what... I mean worst case scenario it's polka, right?

 Top Unusual Activities

Rifftrax Night of the Living Dead!

Ever been a fan of Mystery Science Theater 3000? Tom Servo? Crow? Ring a bell? In select theatres the stars of MST3K will be watching Night of the Living Dead and commenting in real time. Fathom Events has arranged for the live feed to transmit on Thursday, October 24th across the country. Tickets are still available and if you're a fan of the show, or just enjoy making fun of absolutely terrible movies this one is for you. Ticket prices vary on theatre.

Other unusual events:

Nightmare Hallow Scream Park. Have you ever been on a Haunted hayride and thought, "Man I'd love to shoot these monsters"? Well now you can during the Zombie Hunt at Nightmare Hallow-Scream Park in Forest Lake. Armed with glow-in-the-dark paintball guns you can shoot the defenseless actors in full costume as they amble towards you in the dark. I'm mostly mentioning this for the pure fun of it, the reviews aren't too good, you can see them here. Buyer beware, tickets range from $25-$35 and include a haunted house, hayride or both.

The Barebones Halloween Outdoor Puppet Extravaganza... yea this seems about as different as they come. Part giant live puppet show, part pageant, part what the hell? Also if you hate audience participation, you better run like there's no tomorrow. Audience members will come forward in a "public naming ceremony", listing the members of their family who have passed. In attempting to steer the holiday away from the commercialization of Halloween (I can hear Linus crying with joy) they have created a myriad of cultural observances of the holiday. Kooky. I don't think they'll have you sacrifice your first born, but better leave the kids at home just in case ;)
